Many expats bring pets to Spain, including horses, or gain pets while here and wish to export them back to the UK.

If your dog or cat was acquired here then you need to have a full history of vaccinations, including rabies, and you need six months to sort out the paperwork if your pet documentation is not currently completely up to date. All pets are micro-chipped in Spain and all owners must have their pets registered to them.

In the case of horses, export is a fairly straightforward and short process requiring only around 2-3 weeks to complete if you have your horse’s green card in order and their vaccinations are also up to date. Indeed Red Tape have organised the export of horses in as little as 8 working days on several occasions.

Red Tape consultants can organise export papers for your pets or arrange for your pets to be looked after until all their documentation is correct and then arrange their onward travel arrangements to meet you in the UK.

Where horses are concerned, they must pass a normal vetting and then be signed off by the Junta (regional government) vet as fit to travel. Red Tape consultants can also be responsible for organising the travel of your horse to the UK using international racehorse and polo horse transporters who are running horses backwards and forwards every fortnight.

Travel always has some risk of stress for your pets so insurance is necessary if your animals have a financial, as opposed to emotional, value.
